Lana Del Rey ‎– Chemtrails Over The Country Club Review

Notation/Rating/Samples:

Ed1 : Vinyl Polydor ref 3549780 – 2021.

The vinyl has a pressing with a good dynamic range. The surface noise does not equal high quality pressings, but it remains in the quality of current pressings. The rendering is more dynamic and detailed than CD release.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic: ●●●oo (3.5/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●o (4/5)
    • Surface noise: ●●●oo (3/5)
    • Restitution: ●●●oo (3.5/5)
  • Sample : “Let Me Love You Like A Woman” 24 bits 88.2 kHz:
Sample Ed1 Vinyl
Ed2 : Vinyl Polydor Color Beige ref 3549797 – 2021.

This vinyl has been pressed with a non-uniform beige color. The surface noise is a bit lower than the black record, but on the other hand, many crackling defects are present. It’s hard to say if it’s the quality of the pressing or the material that is the cause. But it’s a shame for a special edition not to have a better quality. Otherwise, the musical rendering is similar to the black Ed1 vinyl.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic:  ●●●oo (3.5/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●o (4/5)
    • Surface noise: ●●●oo (3/5)
    • Restitution: ●●●oo (3/5)
  • Sample : “Let Me Love You Like A Woman” 24 bits 88.2 kHz:
Sample Ed2 Vinyl Color
 Ed3 : Vinyl- Polydor Picture Disc ref 3549784 – 2021

Not surprisingly, printing on a disc greatly increases the surface noise which remains audible on all passes with a low sound level. This even impacts the overall dynamics with a lower DR compared to other vinyls, with more treble in the restitution. This is a collector’s record for the graphics, not for the listening quality.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic: ●●●oo (3/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●o (4/5)
    • Surface noise: ●●ooo (2/5)
    • Restitution: ●●ooo (2.5/5)
  • Sample : “Let Me Love You Like A Woman” 24 bits 88.2 kHz:
Sample Ed3 Vinyl Picture Dissc
Ed4 : CD- Polydor ref B0033416-02 – 2021

With its DR8, the CD has less dynamics than the cassette. The compression is audible, reduces the details and the natural of the voice. If you want a physical support, prefer the vinyl edition (Ed1) which will be a more beautiful object with a correct dynamic. For a digital release, you should listen to the Ed5 Streaming version.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic: ●●ooo (2/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●o (4/5)
    • Restitution: ●●ooo (2.5/5)
  • Sample : “Let Me Love You Like A Woman” 16 bits 44.1 kHz:
Sample Ed4 CD
Ed5 : Streaming ref HD (Flac) – 2021

With the standards imposed by the streaming services, the streaming version is the digital version with dynamics (DR11). The listening is clean, detailed and more spaced than the CD release. It is the digital version to listen. Only 3 tracks are in Ultra HD (24 bits 48 kHz), but the advantage of the streaming service is to be able to update the quality of the tracks, that will evolve perhaps for the 8 other tracks.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic: ●●●oo (3.5/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●o (4/5)
    • Restitution: ●●●●o (4/5)
  • Sample : “Let Me Love You Like A Woman” 24 bits 48 kHz:
Sample Ed5 Streaming
Ed6 : Cassette Polydor ref 3549783- 2021

The cassette brings the sound of the magnetic tape. It is smoother than the other supports with a good dynamic. The counterpart of this magnetic recording is that it does not totally respect the original sound balance. Moreover, the tape noise is quite present on the lowest passages.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic: ●●●oo (3/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●o (4/5)
    • Noise: ●oooo (1/5)
    • Restitution: ●●ooo (2/5)
  • Sample : “Let Me Love You Like A Woman” 24 bits 96 kHz:
Sample Ed6 Cassette
Ed7 : Vinyl Polydor RED ref 3553403- 2021

This vinyl was pressed with a red color. The surface noise is a bit higher than the black record. The red material used is perhaps worse in surface noise than the black version. The special edition contains an extra poster. Otherwise, the musical rendering is similar to the black vinyl of the Ed1.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic: ●●●oo (3.5/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●o (4/5)
    • Surface noise: ●●●oo (3/5)
    • Restitution: ●●●oo (3.5/5)
  • TSample : “Let Me Love You Like A Woman” 24 bits 88.2 kHz::
Sample Ed7 Vinyl RED

The choice between the 7 versions will depend on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a digital version, the Streaming version is the one to listen without hesitation.
If you are looking for a vinyl version, you have the choice, the Picture Disc version is the most beautiful, but also the least good to listen to (better than the cassette). Among the three other versions, Black, Beige and Red, it is the Black and Red version that are the best, with a small advantage for the Black version regarding the surface noise. Only one small regret, we would have appreciated a better quality pressing for the vinyls for the limited series.

Detail of the ratings :

  • Dynamic :
    1. Significant dynamic compression, DR less than 7
    2. Compression of the present dynamics, DR between 7 and 9.
    3. Correct piece DR >=10
    4. No dynamic compression (DR >12), dynamic rendering
    5. No dynamic compression, high DR and very dynamic sound rendering
  • Spectrum :
    1. Spectrum cut and less than 15 khz
    2. Spectrum cut at 15 khz
    3. Spectrum not conforming to the original and cut (not HD) or original but limited bandwidth (but less than 20 kHz)
    4. Spectrum conforming to the original (but not HD)
    5. Spectrum conforming to the original with HD resolution (higher than 24kHz)
  • Surface noise (only for vinyl):
    1. Continuous audible noise
    2. Audible surface noise except on passages with a high level of noise
    3. Reduced surface noise, barely audible on low level crossings
    4. Low surface noise, very good quality
    5. Very low surface noise, no defects, almost inaudible on the quiet passages (exceptional disc)
  • Restitution :
    1. Low quality of the restitution mixing dynamics, clarity, separation of voices and instruments.
    2. Average quality of the restitution mixing dynamics, clarity, separation of voices and instruments.
    3. Quality of the restitution mixing dynamics, clarity, separation of voices and instruments. Good record.
    4. High quality of the restitution mixing dynamics, clarity, separation of voices and instruments. Very high level disc.
    5. Maximum quality of the restitution mixing dynamics, clarity, separation of voices and instruments. Exceptional disc.
