The MOFI case, which has been on the internet for more than 10 days, shows that the management of master tapes is indeed a real problem today, because these tapes are aging and have been used many times.
This is why, for the preservation of our heritage, we also digitalise the multi-track tapes that were used to make the master. The advantage of these tapes is that they have not been used very often, so they are not very damaged. This is what is done in the DES studio that I visited and which has produced the greatest French artists. These digital versions are used for the creation of new digital editions and also on vinyl.
But, coming back to the MOFI case, one can understand that it is easier to digitalise in DSD 64 or DSD 128 than to copy everything on tape with the displacement of the analogue material (very fragile tape recorder). But when you want to be a perfectionist, you push perfection to the max and try to do full analogue!
But it all came down to the fact that they were going to produce 40,000 copies of Thriller one steps!
MOFI’s problem is not the technical choice they made with DSD, it’s the lack of transparency and the fact that they let people think that they were doing full analog from master to vinyl, without any analog/digital/analog conversion. While the products are sold very expensive! It is a question of transparency, hence the problem of deception on the vinyls which is evoked on youtube or other sites.
MOFI reacted with this statement on its Facebook page:
We at Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab are aware of customer complaints regarding use of digital technology in our mastering chain. We apologize for using vague language, allowing false narratives to propagate, and for taking for granted the goodwill and trust our customers place in the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab brand.
We recognize our conduct has resulted in both anger and confusion in the marketplace. Moving forward, we are adopting a policy of 100% transparency regarding the provenance of our audio products. We are immediately working on updating our websites, future printed materials, and packaging — as well as providing our sales and customer service representatives with these details. We will also provide clear, specific definitions when it comes to Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab marketing branding such as Original Master Recording (OMR) and UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S). We will backfill source information on previous releases so Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab customers can feel as confident in owning their products as we are in making them.
We thank you for your past support and hope you allow us to continue to provide you the best-sounding records possible — an aim we’ve achieved and continue to pursue with pride.

This information gives the source and processing information of the mastering for some vinyls.
Similarly, the question is also to know what the differences are between SACD mastering and vinyl mastering.
The list will be updated regularly with new information from MOFI.
Interesting how some are just 24/96 PCM transfers. A little step above a 16/44 CD. but then they don’t give us info on the PCM recordings— could just be 16/44 WAV files? That would be such a shame. I pretty much assumed they did this most of the time. It’s not like their albums are so ridiculously great and the difference is like night and day vs standard albums. How do you make any Dire Strait, Steely Dan, or Pink Floyd album much better than the original master?

In the case of digital masters, they could transfer the master directly without any modification, but they do a mastering that will modify the sound rendering in order to obtain the best listening according to their criteria, which explains the difference of the MOFI version compared to other versions.

There’s absolute truth in the statement that these old masters are deteriorating rapidly. The copyright owners should transfer everything to digital if they haven’t already or these gems will be lost forever. As for those folks who just can’t get over this, what do you want…. digital or nothing?

Indeed, it is important to preserve musical works that are on analog tapes, digital in high resolution is indeed a good solution against tape degradation or disappearance in case of problems

To me the biggest tragedy is that people will come away with a bad impression of PCM. 96k isn’t a small step above cd. It’s a massive step; beyond that, DSD is antiquated technology left over from a time when PCM wasn’t good enough, when the audio ADC chips were young technology. By the time AKM and Cirrus Logic were producing their high end flag ships; post 2000, PCM had fully replaced the need for DSD. Now DSD is just “higher numbers” used to trick the uneducated. Leave PCM alone. It’s not 1995, guys.
