Released on 8 April 2022, Hey Hey Rise Up is the first unreleased Pink Floyd recording since 2014. The song includes the vocals of Ukrainian rock band BoomBox’s lead singer, Andriy Khlyvnyuk. This track is now available as a vinyl single and cd single with a second track A Great Day For Freedom 2022. All proceeds to Ukraine humanitarian relief.

The review includes 4 editions: Vinyl , CD , Streaming Qobuz and Tidal.

You can find the review of other Pink Floyd albums:

Below you will find the description of the different editions, as well as the measurements of each edition in the following chapters.
The synthesis of the review and the samples are available here.

This album includes 2 tracks reviewed:

  1. Hey Hey Rise Up
  2. A Great Day For Freedom 2022

First we will analyze each edition in detail (technical and qualitative analysis), then we will compare the successive editions with their dynamics and assign a final score, and you will be able to listen some samples.

The streaming versions may evolve over time, those presented here correspond to the version tested at the date of publication, or update of the review.

Part 2 : Waveform and dynamic comparaisons

Waveform

The waveform represents all the tracks of the album for each version.

The graphs below represent the waveforms of the vinyl versions (Ed1).
This version is dynamic without compression of dynamic effect.

The digital versions CD (Ed2) and streaming Qobuz (Ed3) and Tidal (Ed4) are dynamic, with a slight limitation of the peaks to limit the dynamic. This is confirmed with the DR10 value.

Dynamic

Dynamic represents the ability to reproduce a wide range of sounds from the softest to the loudest. The target is to compare the dynamics of the music and not of the media (CD, digital files or vinyl).

For our 4 editions we have obtained the following Dynamic Range (DR) :

 Ed1: VinylEd2: CDEd3: QobuzEd4: Tidal
GLOBALDR12DR10DR10DR10
MinDR11DR10DR10DR10
MaxDR12DR11DR11DR11
Hey Hey Rise UpDR12DR11DR11DR11
A Great Day For Freedom 2022DR11DR10DR10DR10

With a DR10 and DR11 for the songs of the digital versions, the dynamic is good especially for the current production which has a tendency to be much lower. The vinyl is just above one, so a very small gap.

As a reminder, the scale goes from 0 to more 20, but the dynamics are considered good from 12, quite good between 10 and 11, and deteriorate below 10.

Part 3 : spectrum comparisons

Spectrum

The Spectrum allows to check the tonal balance of the music (balance between treble, medium and bass sounds) and to detect process that may have been carried out during the recording, the mixing, mastering or manufacturing phases. It is also possible to detect frequency interference issues.

The curve represents the average frequency distribution over the sample “A Great Day For Freedom 2022”.

The response curves of the Ed1 Vinyl 1986 (white) vs Ed3 Qobuz (blue) versions are superimposed up to 10 kHz, beyond which the vinyl gradually attenuates to -5 dB at 20 kHz (yellow zone). The yellow arrow shows the frequency limit of the Qobuz digital version of the recording at around 27 kHz.

The response curves of the Ed2 CD (white) vs Ed3 Qobuz (blue) versions are superimposed up to 22 kHz (yellow arrow), the frequency limit of the CD due to its sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz. This shows that the recording was made in high resolution.

The response curves of the Ed4 Tidal (white) vs Ed3 Qobuz (blue) versions overlap perfectly across the spectrum, indicating the same master source.

Part 4 : Spectrogram comparaisons

Spectrogram

Spectrogram is another representation of frequency versus time of a track. For each channel (right and left), horizontal axis represents time, and the vertical axis represents frequency. The amplitude is represented by the intensity (brightness) of the color of each point in the image.

The vinyl spectrogram (Ed1) continues above 20 kHz (yellow arrow). The white arrow shows music and the distortion due to the playback of the vinyl above 30 kHz.

The spectrograms of the Qobuz (Ed3) and Tidal (Ed4) versions are similar, rising above 20 kHz (yellow arrow) with a limit at 27 kHz (white arrow), with no signal above 27 kHz (black area).

We find for the CD (Ed2) the limit at 22 kHz (yellow arrow) due to the sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz, and a zone without signal above (white arrow).

Part 5 : Summary, scoring and Samples

Ed1: Vinyl ref : PFRS40/7 – 2022

The 45 rpm single is not the usual format used in the tests, this is a first. So there is one track per side. The 45rpm speed allows a good reproduction of the dynamics with a reduced surface noise. We find the precision of analog while keeping the warmth of vinyl, but with a detailed treble.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic: ●●●●o (3.5/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●o (4/5)
    • Surface noise: ●●●●o (4/5)
    • Restitution: ●●●●o (4/5)
  • Sample : “A Great Day For Freedom 2022” 24 bits 88.2 kHz:
Sample Ed1 Vinyl
Ed2: CD ref : PFRS40 – 2022

The CD is dynamic with a balanced and precise rendering. There is no significant dynamic compression as can be found on current productions, a very good news for this single.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic: ●●●oo (3/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●o (4/5)
    • Restitution: ●●●●o (4/5)
  • Sample : “A Great Day For Freedom 2022” 16 bits 44.1 kHz:
Sample Ed2 CD
Ed3: Qobuz Hi-Res – 2022

The high-resolution streaming version is very similar to the CD version, with the dynamics of the CD but with a slightly finer representation of the treble than the CD version.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic: ●●●oo (3/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●● (5/5)
    • Restitution: ●●●●o (4/5)
  • Sample : “A Great Day For Freedom 2022” 24 bits 96 kHz:
Sample Ed3 Qobuz Hi-Res
Ed4: Tidal Master – 2022

The Tidal version is similar to the Qobuz version, we appreciate the finesse of the restitution without compression of dynamics of the loudness war.

  • Rating:
    • Dynamic: ●●●oo (3/5)
    • Bandwidth: ●●●●● (5/5)
    • Restitution: ●●●●o (4/5)
  • Sample : “A Great Day For Freedom 2022” 24 bits 96 kHz:
Sample Ed4 Tidal Master

This single is available in different formats, offering the maximum of each format, so everyone can choose their favourite format, we will note the beautiful rendering of the high resolution digital version and the warmth of the vinyl for the voice.
