Spectrum

The Spectrum allows to check the tonal balance of the music (balance between treble, medium and bass sounds) and to detect process that may have been carried out during the recording, the mixing, mastering or manufacturing phases. It is also possible to detect frequency interference issues.

The curve represents the average frequency distribution over the sample “Don’t Know Why”.

The interesting features on this curve are the following:

  1. Beyond 4 kHz (yellow area), the treble level of the vinyl is up to 3 dB lower than the streaming version. The vinyl version will sound a little smoother with less precision in the highs.
  2. Above 20 kHz, there is no drop in level at 22kHz, which shows the use of a 96kHz master.
  3. Below 60 Hz (green area), the vinyl has almost 1 dB less than the streaming version..

Spectrogram

Spectrogram is another representation of the frequency versus time of a track. For each channel (right and left), horizontal axis represents time, and the vertical axis represents frequency. The amplitude is represented by the intensity (brightness) of the color of each point in the image.

As is often the case in recordings, the majority of the music is below 20 kHz (yellow arrow).
Above 20 kHz (green arrow) there is the continuity of the music. This continuity is due to the master which is in 96 kHz (music), but also to the distortion which is generated by the vinyl medium.
