How to record a real orchestra?

After listening to Rhasodie in Blue in concert at the Radio France auditorium and comparing it at home with the music available on Radio France and Arte, I wondered if we could get exactly the same sound from the concert at home? In particular, the question is how the recording was made, what equipment (microphones, etc.) was used and where the microphones were placed…

I discovered this video and it’s a perfect example of the points made about the fact that an orchestra’s recording depends on the work that’s done to bring its personality to the recording.
Here’s a video made by Dominique Spagnolo, musician, conductor and sound engineer, who gives a very detailed presentation of all the preparations for recording an orchestra on his DeltaSigmaTV channel. In this video, you’ll find explanations on microphone selection, microphone positioning, orchestra organization and much more.

The text is in French, but if you activate the automatic subtitling and English translation, you’ll be able to follow all the explanations.
