Waveform and Spectrum: DR6

The waveform of the CD – 2025 version shows a very low dynamic range confirmed with DR6.

The spectrogram shows that the signal rises to 22 kHz (yellow arrow) with no signal above this frequency (white arrow) due to the 44.1 kHz sampling frequency.

The graph below compares the spectrum of the CD – 2025 (white curve) with the spectrum of the Tidal Max – 2025 (blue curve). The curves of the two spectra overlap perfectly up to 21 kHz. Beyond that, the CD is limited to 22 kHz due to its 44.1 kHz sampling rate (white arrow), while the Tidal Max edition cuts off at 24 kHz because of its 48 kHz sampling rate.

Synthesis and listening

The CD version fully aligns with today’s music industry standards, featuring dynamic compression with a DR6 rating. This comes as no surprise — the pursuit of a loud, impactful sound often takes precedence over preserving subtle dynamics. One might have hoped for a more balanced approach, allowing the mix to breathe and reveal finer details. However, for a large-scale production like this, opting for a dense and energetic sound remains consistent with market demands and audience expectations. To enjoy a more spacious listening experience with greater dynamics and nuance, it’s best to turn to the Dolby Atmos version, which offers a more natural and immersive sound.

Waveform and Spectrum: DR13

The waveform of the Tidal Dolby Atmos – 2025 shows a high range confirmed with DR13.

The spectrogram of the Tidal Dolby Atmos track in 7.1.4 is limited to 20kHz (yellow arrow) with no signal above (white arrow). This limitation is due to Dolby Digital Plus encoding, which is a lossy encoder that limits bandwidth to optimize data size for a bit rate of 768 kbits/s. The green arrow shows the 120Hz filtering of the bass channel (LFE).

The graph below represents the spectrum of the Tidal Dolby Atmos – 2025.
The spectrum of Tidal s Dolby Atmos version decoded in 7.1 shows that all channels are used. The LFE channel is used with a cutoff frequency of 120 Hz (green arrow). The white arrow indicates the high-frequency limit at 20 kHz due to Dolby Digital Plus encoding. The yellow arrow indicates the high-frequency limit at 24 kHz due to encoding at the 48 kHz sampling frequency used.

Synthesis and listening

This Dolby Atmos version is a very pleasant surprise. Although present on her previous albums, the format had previously lacked expressiveness and immersion, but it reaches a whole new level on this release. In this album, all channels are carefully utilized, providing precise placement of instruments, music, and vocals. The result is an immersive, lively, and highly successful soundstage, offering the album’s most dynamic performance and a more natural, detailed vocal reproduction. It’s a very good Atmos mix. It is a pity that no Blu-ray Audio version is planned, as it would have allowed listeners to enjoy this mix in Dolby Digital TrueHD lossless.

Tidal Max – 2025

Waveform and Spectrum: DR6

The waveform of the Tidal Max – 2025 version shows a very low dynamic range confirmed with DR6.

The spectrogram shows that the signal rises to 24 kHz (yellow arrow) with no signal above this frequency (white arrow) due to the 48 kHz sampling frequency.

This Tidal MAX version, despite its 24-bit / 48 kHz format, delivers a sound very similar to the CD version. The same dynamic compression is present, a result of the well-known loudness war.

Rating:

  • Dynamic: ●oooo (1)
  • Bandwidth: ●●●●o (4)
  • Restitution: ●●ooo (2.5)

Presentation

A beautiful vinyl edition featuring a 33? rpm LP in Portofino Orange Glitter. The gatefold jacket is exceptionally well-crafted (see photos) and also includes a poster. The overall presentation is elegant, worthy of a collector’s box set. There’s a clear inspiration from the rich and detailed packaging often seen in K-Pop releases. (Ref: 602478225338)

Waveform and Spectrum: DR11

The waveform of the Opaque Pink And Pale Yellow vinyl – 2025 version shows a good dynamic range confirmed with DR11.

The spectrogram shows that the signal rises above 20 kHz (yellow arrow) with signal above this frequency (white arrow) containing musical information and distortion due to the vinyl record’s operating principle.

The graph below compares the spectrum of the Opaque Pink And Pale Yellow vinyl – 2025 (white curve) with the spectrum of the Orange Translucent vinyl – 2025 (blue curve).A perfect overlap of the two spectral curves can be observed up to 20 kHz. Beyond this frequency, the level is lower on the orange vinyl record, indicating a reduced background noise.

Synthesis and listening

The sound of the vinyl version is generally identical to that of the CD (or stereo streaming), both in terms of tonal balance and soundstage. However, the digital version shows slightly greater precision in the high-frequency range. As is often the case, it is difficult to determine whether the vinyl pressing was made from a dynamically compressed digital master, but this is highly likely.

Beyond 10 kHz, the vinyl exhibits a gradual high-frequency roll-off, reaching up to 4 dB at 17 kHz.

Synthesis and listening

The sound rendering is very similar between the two vinyl editions, offering a consistent reproduction in both tonal balance and spatial imaging.

Sample 1 Ed 5: Orange Translucent vinyl – 2025

Is the album The Life of a Showgirl living up to the scale of the marketing surrounding it? With such carefully orchestrated promotion, no risks were taken: the mastering adheres to current standards, favoring a powerful sound at the expense of dynamic range (DR6). The true added value, however, lies in the Dolby Atmos version, which delivers a high-quality mix, fully exploiting spatialization and providing a more dynamic and natural reproduction of the vocals.

Dynamic Range measurements are shown below.

  1. Could you include youtube music video as another media format in your list of formats to analyse? I tried to download Life of a showgirl music video and Elizabeth Taylor lyric video from youtube and analysed using audacity. Surprisingly they have very good Dynamic Range. I have noticed this pattern with other modern albums as well. Music videos tend to have higher Dynamic Range but youtube compression is capped at 256 kbps, so it would be nice to find out how youtube video format stand up against other formats.

    1. Indeed, YouTube videos are known to have slightly more dynamics than music streaming versions. In the case of this album, for the track “The Life of a Showgirl,” the YouTube video has a DR8 compared to DR6 for the stereo music versions and DR13 for the Dolby Atmos version (7.1.4), and for the track “The Fate of Ophelia,” we find the same DR values. YouTube is indeed more interesting from a dynamic standpoint, but with a lossy encoding format. One could hope that the stereo music editions would align with the YouTube masters.
I plan to do a comparison with YouTube for Jean-Michel Jarre’s latest concert.
